Urban Takes Helsinki, a project by Michelle Teran, looks at personal stories and different perspectives of Helsinki as depicted through online video. City Canvas

ANIMATED WALKING TOUR

City Canvas is an animation project that illuminates street spaces with moving images, mobile projectors and light painting. The City Canvas crew leads participants on an animated walking tour evoking symbols and characters on urban surfaces. By projecting only ephemeral, fleeting traces, the project makes a commentary on the illegal status of graffiti and celebrates street-level creativity. Read more…

The Race Code

A  RACIAL TECHNOLOGY?

The Race Code is a photography based installation that tackles with issues of race, culture and perceptions of one’s self and the other. The installation consists of a photo booth, a face recognition software and a wall projection of a matrix of faces. The program takes a passport-like picture of the viewer, performs instant measurements of the face, which then appears on the projected matrix of faces. Read more…

MOMENTS FROM A DISAPPEARING CITY

The Kallio district in Helsinki is currently changing rapidly through gentrification and real estate development. The Kallio Archive is an open media service documenting the life of the neighbourhood on video. The archive collects moments from a disappearing city and publishes its materials for free use on the web. It is based on a concept of “near media” which reflects urban memories online – and is used and produced by the residents. Read more…
